IOLANTHE
A wonderful story about fairies by Gilbert and Sullivan
We are currently building interest in this production:
WATCH PARTY, Saturday, November 14th from 4-7 p.m. at Almost Famous, our Kirkland home base.
We'll watch the DVD of the Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society's 1997 production of Iolanthe, which included some of our current orchestra members. Food and drinks served. RSVP to seattlecommunitytheater@gmail.com if you'd like to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of our other actors and musicians.
Production Team Needs!
Could you help with Sets, Costumes, Makeup and Hair, Props, Stage Management or Crew? We'll be seeking a volunteer Assistant Director and at least two choreographers for this show.
Costume sewing parties will be held once per month from November -March to modify some beautiful dresses we already have for the fairies. Watch for announcements about dates for this. We need experienced seamstresses and those who'd like to learn.

Synopsis
Iolanthe is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert, first performed in 1882. It is one of the Savoy operas and is the seventh of fourteen operatic collaborations by Gilbert and Sullivan.
In the opera, the fairy Iolanthe has been banished from fairyland because she married a mortal; this is forbidden by fairy law. Her son, Strephon, is an Arcadian shepherd who wants to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery. All the members of the House of Peers also want to marry Phyllis. When Phyllis sees Strephon hugging a young woman (not knowing that it is his mother – immortal fairies all appear young), she assumes the worst and sets off a climactic confrontation between the peers and the fairies.
The opera satirises many aspects of British government, law and society. The confrontation between the fairies and the peers is a version of one of Gilbert's favourite themes: a tranquil civilisation of women is disrupted by a male-dominated world through the discovery of mortal love.
